What is bullying?

What is bullying?

Bullying involves physical, verbal and psichological attacks. It is when someone intimidates a “victim” who cannot defend himself or herself, usually because of size or strength.
Bullying has different forms: hitting, kicking, using nicknames, saying or writing bad things about others, leaving them out of activities, not talking to them, making them feel uncomfortable or scared, and talking or damaging their things.

Effects of Bullying

Effects of Bullying

Bullying is an activity that has horrible consequences. Some students don´t want to go to school because of bullying.
Bullying can cause a loss of self-esteem, lack of motivation, anxiety about going to school, stress and depression, sleeping problems, stomach disorders and headaches. It can also reduce students confidence and concentration.

Students who are bullied often feel weak and sometimes they think it is their fault.

The most common forms of bullying are:

The most common forms of bullying are:

-Physical Bullying

It is normal to play with your classmates and friends; but, when someone hurts you while playing and he or she does it on purpose, it can be dangerous.
Physical bullying includes hitting, kicking, slapping, pinching and pushing and even destroying personal belongings.
If you are playing with someone and that person is using his/her physical strenght to hurt you, you have to tell your teachers, parents and other adults around you.

-Verbal Bullying

This kind of bullying is when someone uses language to gain power over others. It usually includes insults and bad words; for example, when someone makes fun of others physical appearance, culture, race or religion, or when someone spreads rumors about others.

-Gesture Bullying

It is a non-verbal kind of bullying. It is when someone uses unkind gestures that can be frightening. If someone usually looks at you feel uncomfortable, you should talk about it with other people around you, especially your teachers and parents.

-Exclusion Bullying

The school is a place where you can interact with many other students. It is very important for everybody to work and play in a friendly manner. However, if a classmate does not let you play with others, join in a group activity, join in a game or participate in other activities, he or she is probably using exclusion bullying.

-Extortion Bullying

Some children receive money from their parents to buy a snack at school during lunch time. However, some students force others to give them their money or even their food. Remember that nobody can force you to do anything that you don´t like. Everybody should respect others belongings.

-Cyber Bullying

This kind of bullying is becoming common nowadays because of the use of technology by children and teenagers. Cyber bullying is very similar to verbal bullying, but the difference is that bullies use the internet or cellphones to bother others.

Here you will find some tips to avoid being bullied or to stop it.

Here you will find some tips to avoid being bullied or to stop it.

*The most important thing is communication. Talk to someone you trust, especially your teachers, parents or older siblings. It the first person you talk to does not help you, talk to someone else until you get help.

*Try to be always with a friend or friends. Bullies usually bother students who are alone.

*Do not get angry. It a bully sees that you get angry; he or she will feel more powerful. If he or she is bothering you, walk away and tell an adult.

*Bullying is wrong. It is a hurtful and embarrassing action that needs to be stopped. If we don´t stop bullying, it can take days, weeks and even years for the victim to recover.

*Remember that nobody has the right to hurt other people. If you see someone that is bullying someone else, tell an adult.

*We spend hours at school, so we should do whatever possible to spend this time in a friendly and safe environment.
